But yesterday, it was like Back To The Future Day at Yankee Stadium. After old pal and teammate-again Alfonso Soriano drove home the game winning single on a day that saw Jeter return to the lineup and hit a homerun on the first pitch he saw, Derek was grinning ear-to-ear with a twinkle in his eyes I hadn't seen since the late-nineties. Seriously.
One has to wonder if, just maybe, Jeter likes this Yankee team more than others he's been on in, oh, let's see, ummmm, since before A-Rod joined the team in '04.
A-Rod, of course, is staring at a lifetime suspension and the guy the Yanks dealt to get him, Soriano, the once rising Yankee star with the 1,000-watt smile, is back with the Captain once again. And just for good measure, Rivera picked up the win by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Yep, something about Derek's smile was different and very telling. It looked like more than a victory smile and more like some great weight was lifted off his shoulders. Baseball is fun again for Derek Jeter.
